Collection System Maintenance Technician 1

Job Classification

General Function

Under general supervision, maintains the Town of Lyman’s collection system, pump stations, and related equipment.  Performs skilled work in monitoring, repairing, and maintaining the functionality of the collection system equipment and infrastructure.  Reports to the Wastewater Maintenance Supervisor.

Representative Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Shall perform all assigned duties in accordance with safety procedures and policies while continually observing the collection and transport process, ensuring all equipment is functioning properly.
  • Inspects all assigned machinery and equipment, performs repairs as required, troubleshoots equipment malfunctions, performs preventative maintenance as required
  • Maintains and records data in logbook and computer databases
  • Performs electrical and electronics troubleshooting as required
  • Assists other employees and volunteers as required
  • Performs maintenance, preventative and corrective, on a variety of collection system equipment as required
  • Assists in ground maintenance as required
  • Operates Vac truck and jetter when required
  • Clears blockages in the sewer collection system as required
  • Assists in grounds maintenance at wastewater treatment facility as required
  • Responds to emergencies in a timely fashion

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, practices, materials, and procedures related to the operation and maintenance of a wastewater collection system
  • All applicable procedures and health and safety hazards/precautions applicable to wastewater treatment, operations, and maintenance
  • Basic knowledge of electricity, electronic controls, pumps, and related equipment

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities cont.

  • Ability to:
    1. Operate computer software related to wastewater maintenance
    2. Use hand tools and equipment
    3. Follow all safety practices and procedures
    4. Detect flaws or defects in electrical systems and electronic controls and make necessary repairs
    5. Prioritize daily routine around unforeseen incidents and occurrences as to maintain plant process and compliance
    6. Operate a variety of equipment, interpret a variety of data and instrument readings, and respond quickly to operational problems
    7. Communicate technical information clearly and concisely
    8. Accurately log instrument readings and operating information
    9. Enter and work in confined spaces as per OSHA regulations
    10. Maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers.

Qualifying Education and Experience (Minimum Requirements)

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a High School diploma or G.E.D. and one year experience working in a collection system.  Minimum of a South Carolina State Driver’s License required.  CPR and First Aid certification must be obtained within six months of hire.  Class B CDL permit with tanker endorsement must be obtained within six months of hire.  Class B CDL must be obtained within one year of hire.

            Special Requirements:  Requires 24 hour on call and inoculation to prevent Hepatitis

Tools and Equipment Used

Personal Protective Equipment, computer, telephone, motor vehicle, vac truck, jetter, equipment including but not limited to: telemetry, electric motors and controls, gas/diesel engines, generators, pumps, locators, smoke testers, camera systems,  hydraulics, toxic gas regulators, flammable gas compressors, air compressors, mixers, microprocessor control units, chemical metering devices, electrical test equipment, belt press, various lawn maintenance equipment, bush hog, backhoe

Physical Requirements

Ability to perform moderately strenuous to strenuous tasks and the ability to lift 100 lbs.  Move throughout the treatment plant and collection system walking, using stairs and ladders.  Sufficient mobility to perform duties in small places by crouching, stooping or kneeling, and physical activity to perform tasks requiring physical strength and finger dexterity.  Must pass respirator spirometry and fit test on an annual basis.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.  A variety of Personal Protective Equipment is used on a daily basis including hand, foot, head, and eye protection.  The operator will be trained and tested in accordance with CFR 29.1910.134 and utilize full face cartridge respirators during

chlorine/sulfur dioxide operations.  There are many health and safety hazards associated with wastewater operations, including exposure to blood borne and waterborne diseases and other biological hazards associated with working in or around raw sewage, working near high voltage equipment, contact with a variety of combustible, corrosive, and toxic chemicals and gases such as chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, acids and caustics.  Position is required to work in all sections of the wastewater facility and collection system and often transitions from indoors to outdoors in all weather conditions.  Some portions of the plant are noisy, hot, and cramped and may contain offensive odors.  Some plant surfaces are slippery and/or have open grates.  Due to the size and size and physical layout of the facility and collection system, the ability to climb stairs and agility are required.  Shift work may be required.
